Mechanical engineering, like many other disciplines, is experiencing significant integration with fields such as materials science, electrical engineering, and chemical engineering. Similarly, biotechnology has become a key area of convergence for mechanical engineering. In this talk, I will explore the design and fabrication of engineered systems and platforms that address important challenges in microbiology, particularly medical microbiology. This involves the integration of microfluidics, optical tweezers, stable isotope probing, Raman microspectroscopy, and software programming. I will present an integrated platform that enables the sorting of target cells based on their functional properties within complex microbial communities.
The main goal of this talk is to demonstrate how mechanical engineering can be effectively combined with biological science. The session will be interactive, with a strong emphasis on audience engagement. I plan to foster an active discussion, encouraging a dynamic “ping-pong” exchange of ideas with the audience.
