Avatar Modeling and Animation for VR and AR

Virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and the metaverse are increasingly recognized as enduring media forms, transcending initial waves of hype and disillusionment. Central to the functionality of VR/AR applications is the virtual avatar, serving as a conduit for user interaction within digital environments. This talk will provide an overview of the current state-of-the-art in modeling and animating virtual avatars. In the realm of avatar modeling, I will explore methodologies encompassing deep learning and physics-based approaches. These techniques aim to enhance the realistic portrayal of human body features and clothing within virtual spaces. Shifting the focus to avatar animation, particular emphasis will be placed on AR-based telepresence. This technology facilitates the interaction of users located at a distance, requiring intelligent avatars capable of semi-autonomous movement within remote environments to convey user intentions effectively. The presentation will highlight recent achievements in pursuit of these objectives.
