Title: Agent-based Modeling and Simulation in the Generation of Digital Twins for Smart Manufacturing

Abstract
Over the years, the use of modeling and simulation (M&S) has been boosted for Digital Twinning
of production systems. To keep pace with the technological changes, this talk covers three topics: i)
M&S in the era of digital twins, ii) the concept and applications of agent-based modeling and
simulation, and iii) future manufacturing systems with digital twins. After a comprehensive look at
how M&S contributes to the ‘Digital Twin’ paradigm, we are going to talk a little bit more deeply
about one of M&S approaches, so-called agent-based modeling and simulation (aka multi-agent
systems). You can see the approach addresses interactions of several intelligent agents which can
be the medium for smarter manufacturing with AI. At the end, the potential and challenges of M&S
will be identified for smart manufacturing by discussing my thoughts on the future of manufacturing
systems.
