Abstract

The nanotechnology, hot area of recent technology, also owes to many things to the material science and engineering. This colloquium will present the above issue to the audiences working for material and mechanical engineering fields with an overview of the nano-carbon materials and their applications to give a motivation to their future works. Nanotechnology has introduced very promising materials of which the unusual structures and unique properties were expected to revolutionize the fields of energy storage, biomedical, nanoelectronics, and nanocomposite materials. Among those nano-materials, nano-carbons and their based nano-engineered composites present the novel smart material properties in nano and macro scale. They provide unique combinations of properties such a high surface area to volume ratio, super capacitance, electrical conductivity, magnetic properties and other multifunctional properties as open the way to develop new devices. In addition, the nano-carbon based smart materials offer very promising sensing opportunities. This presentation presents an application of nano-carbon based smart material as a novel sensory material in the area of structural health monitoring.
