Active magnetic bearings are a mechatronic device which utilizes magnetic forces to levitate rotating shaft without mechanical contact. They enable higher speeds because of reduced losses. Also, the dynamics of the system can be adjusted by modifying the control law of magnetic bearings. In this seminar, we will introduce several research projects involving magnetic bearings at Chungnam National University. After introducing the operating principles of magnetic bearings, we will present the research on flywheel energy storage system (FESS). FESS is a mechanical battery that stores the electric power in terms of kinetic energy and provide the electric power if necessary by converting the kinetic energy into electric counterpart. Not only large scale FESS are viable, but also tiny power buffer is useful to improve the power density of mobile systems such as drones. The seminar will present some results of power buffers applied to drone. Next, the research on oil-free turbo-chillers will be presented. By removing oil in a turbo-chiller, the efficiency can be improved with smaller size. The seminar will show commercialization efforts of magnetic bearings to realize oil-free compressors of turbo-chillers.
